The City of Richmond turns 120 years old today. There are many ways to celebrate.
Richmond’s oldest building is East Brother Lighthouse is 151 years old this year, 31 years older than the City of Richmond. Help save East Brother by making a birthday contribution:

Richmond’s beginning as a city was a result of
a surge of industrial development at the turn of the 20th Century, with the establishment of the Standard Oil refinery (now Chevron) in 1901 and the expansion of the Santa Fe Railroad’s operations. This
growth transformed Richmond into an important industrial and port city. Interestingly, residents had voted for the city’s incorporation a few days earlier, on August 3rd, but the paperwork wasn’t processed until after the weekend festivities, leading to the
official date of August 7th. There was a parade on August 4th and a fireworks display on Nicholl Knob.
The first meeting of the Richmond City Council, after the city’s incorporation, was not held until July 6, 1909. During that meeting, the newly elected council
members were sworn in, and Joseph Benjamin Willis was elected as the first Mayor. At that meeting, the elected Council members were Edward J. Garrard, John N.
Hartnett, James C. Owens, Edward McDuff, Otto R. Ludewig, Homer Eugene Wyatt, John Joseph Dooling, Joseph Benjamin Willis, and Gerry Alton Follet..
The City of Richmond became a charter city on March 24, 1909.
