
Memorial Day is a federal holiday for remembering and honoring the U.S. military personnel who died while serving
in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. It is also considered to be the unofficial beginning of summer.
In the Vietnam War, Richmond lost 31 young men. This Memorial Day 2026, we remember and honor PFC Gregory Michael
Ashford, serving with the 3rd Surgical Hospital, 68th Medical Group, 44TH Medical Brigade, USARV Medical Command, USARV. He was a Medical Corpsman and died August
25, 1971, at the age of 21. He was in Vinh Long Province, which is in the Mekong Delta.
Gregory was born in Alameda, but his family was living in Richmond in 1971. His father, a truck driver, was James
H. Ashford and his mother was Thelma Hunter-Ashford. He had one brother and three sisters. He graduated from Richmond High School. His mother died in 1980 and his father in 1987.
