Honolulu, Monday, June 30, 1941

Monday

Just got in from town & got both your letters – was surprised to hear about L.S.U – I had just had a letter from Geraldine asking me to room with her
off the campus (sounds like a good idea) – maybe you all could get together on plans before I get home. However, my letters for U of Ark rush dates got off on the last clipper. I’m all upset on account of my boat schedule – it stays in dry dock in Frisco
& all the passengers are sent on the L.A. by rail the day of arrival which means I won’t even get to see Mandy Allison in Frisco – we had counted on at least a day & night together (her father – Gen. Ryan is at Hamilton Field near there & Aunt Susan thinks
it’d be very good for me to visit them & I’d love to see Mandy).

I’m sorry Eliz. Is gone – cause I know how hard it is for you without help – what happened to her?

Hope carol & Pinck had a nice rip in Florida – I wrote them last week.

I’m sitting by the telephone trying to get through a dozen calls in between lines – everything’s busy.

Had fun last night – Mrs Caldwell called up to see if I were coming to her tea dance (the first I’d heard because invitations were lost in the message center) & the same time
Bryan called saying he couldn’t come – so I went out to the Schofield Club with Capt. & Mrs. Trumbull (Dental Corps) & met a blind date – Bob Brown from DEE trait – met Bob Hand in the bar as we went in the club & he called Max to tell him I was out there.
So after the humamujig was over Max & I had dinner with Mully & Bob then went to the movies. My pink organdy dress with pink Oleanders in my haor looked awfully pretty for the party.

The picnic Saturday was grand fun. We had cocktails etc. at Babe’s house, then cooked steaks on the grill across the street. All the DeRussy crowd was there — & they are all
such fun & so congenial.

Not much news of Thurs. & Fri – Thursday had dinner with Leo Billger but was so worn out that I came in about nine — & Fri night went out with Max for about an hour.

Later – have just finished dinner & listened to the news cast – war is certainly a cloud over us all now. Gen. Short, in command of Haw. Dept. says all Army dependents will
probably be evacuated (not officially announced yet) by Sept. on account of food, etc. Then we listened to “information Please” — Aunt Susan has sent in a question on something by ______ & is very anxious to hear from it – a word she traced all over
the Terr. Of Haw.

Not much on this week except planning for trip home & getting my well worn Honolulu wardrobe patched & pressed. Tomorrow night Bryan Arnold & I are going to the Academy of Arts
to see some movies (some of the first moving pictures filmed & quite rare) – Saturday, a date with Maxim, for Maj. Holmes birthday party or Bunt’s party at Hickam.  You’ve no idea how many circles my poor feeble brain twirls in, when I think of all the things
necessary for the trip home – baggage, letters, wires, packing and mountains of other worries. Sometimes I think It’s be easier to satay here & get married – but it doesn’t take long of thinking like that to make me quickly start figuring again on boat & train
schedules home. Which is purely another bothersome circle.

Then I’ll be in L.A. two days earlier now that the boat schedule has changed – will leave noon of the 22nd from Frisco.

My white cellophane hula skirt is to be ready the latter part of this week — & I’ll get my records right away – my dancing is coming along beautifully. Next week, too, I’m
to get translations of the Haw. songs’ words.

Honestly, do you suppose I’ll ever get my wits & belongings together & really ever get home in one piece, complete with baggage?

Had lunch at DeRussy today with Babe – then got Kay & Bernice to play bridge. For the first time since I’ve been here, it actually
poured rain there all afternoon. The Pavilion Club felt like a zoo with all the glass walls, windows, & doors closed on the falling heavens. Maybe it’s just a “Chicken Little” complex, acquitted from too much Hawaiian sun!

Anyhoo I gotta get this off on the clipper – via the Kitchen table (our outgoing mail slot).

Thanks so much for the check & I’ll guard it with my life – no foolishness! Too
many many little extra like to pop up at last minutes and make the coins jump away with “Boo” – which reminds me of the lovely Petit Point bag in a Chinese store for $15.00. I turned & ran, lest it chase me into a purchase.

Well, I’ll see you all about a month from today & will wire from L.A. & points toward Arkansas.

Love,

Cecilia

If you get this soon enough that is at all possible to get the money for my train fare $50.00 to here before I sail – even to the day before – please because I can get my ticket
here & check my luggage straight through home form here & will have to get my ticket from San F. anyhoo. Could it possibly the train fare – be wired, or does it costs too much?
