Polio Plus Update

Best wishes for a happy and successful World Immunization Week (April 24-30)!

We had one case of Wild poliovirus Type 1-caused paralysis reported from Afghanistan and one from Pakistan this week; which makes it 9 children paralyzed by WPV1 year-to-date for 2025.

At my every other month, world-wide meeting of EPNCs, it was noted that several experts believe the last case of paralytic polio will occur in Afghanistan before the last case occurs in Pakistan.
The Afghan polio workers have been very creative and innovative in their approach to getting children vaccinated in spite of Taliban restrictions!  4 cases of variant poliovirus-caused paralysis confirmed this week —3 in Ethiopia and 1 in Nigeria.

Please know that the Pakistan government firmly supports the end of polio in their country.  There are several forces at work that try to stop vaccinations.

Together we will end polio!

World Immunization Week – A Call to Action

World Immunization Week, observed from April 24–30, reminds us of the vital role vaccines play in protecting lives across all ages.
As communities worldwide recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to rebuild trust in vaccines and close the immunization gap.

Vaccines have eradicated smallpox, brought polio to the brink of extinction, and continue to prevent countless illnesses. Yet, millions still lack access due to misinformation, poverty, and healthcare barriers.

Let’s use this week to raise awareness, support outreach programs, and advocate for equitable access to vaccines for everyone, everywhere.
Immunization isn’t just a personal choice—it’s a shared responsibility.
