New fund helps Richmond families afford swim lessons
StaffApril 10, 2026
The new Douglas T. Corbin Aquatics Scholarship Fund offers Richmond families affordable swim lessons and lifeguard training. Established by the
family of the late community advocate, the fund partners with the Richmond Community Fund and the City of Richmond to improve youth safety and recreation access. The program provides up to 50 percent off registration fees at the Richmond Swim Center and the Richmond Plunge for children ages 3 to 12. The
scholarships are capped at $300 per child annually and are available to residents meeting specific income guidelines. With typical session fees ranging from $48 to $96, the fund aims to make swimming skills accessible to all children. The fund also supports city lifeguard recruitment by offering $300 stipends to individuals in training who commit to working for the City of Richmond.
Recruitment for these roles occurs in February and March, with training beginning in April.A lifelong swimmer and former lifeguard, Corbin served as the Juvenile Court Referee for Contra Costa County for 15 years. Following his legal career, he presided
over the Early Childhood Mental Health Program. The scholarship honors his history of advocacy for children and his involvement in aquatic activities. It is the hope of the Corbin family that this fund will grow and continue to provide scholarships long into the future, so contributions may be
made to c/o Douglas T. Corbin Aquactics Scholarship Fund, RCF Connects, 3260 Blume Drive #101, Richmond CA 94806. Donate online at: https://bit.ly/Corbin-ScholarshipYou can
