1 – My Report
I – Stop Illegal Fireworks Campaign
After a group of concerned residents reached out to me to get the city administration involved in their “Stop Illegal Fireworks” campaign (SIFRichmondCA.org) I asked
the Richmond Police Department, the Richmond Fire Department, and Public Works to join the campaign. I am glad to report that they are doing an excellent job of collaborating together to deter illegal fireworks activity and enhance public safety this 4th of
July Season. Below is a summary of key developments (Thanks to Assistant Police Chief Tim Simmons for the report):
- Operations Plan: The operations plan, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach, is currently being finalized
and is expected to be completed within the next one to two weeks. - Data and Enforcement Strategy: While historical data on fireworks-related calls for service is being
used to inform our approach, most of our enforcement on the night of the operation will be guided by real-time calls for service to ensure timely and targeted responses. - Aerial Support: An RPD-licensed unmanned aerial pilot will be deployed as our Drone First Responder
(DFR), with a second officer supporting with a smaller unmanned aerial system (UAS) for added coverage. - Personnel: The police department is nearly fully staffed for July 4th with the 20 personnel
requested for the operation. Final staffing confirmations are expected by the end of this week. Strong staffing levels improve our response time and enforcement efforts. - Public Awareness: Our first social media awareness blitz is scheduled to begin this weekend. Additionally,
flyers and signage—including the one pictured below—have been printed and are being distributed across the city throughout the coming week. - Interagency Coordination: RPD and RFD are ensuring social media platforms support and amplify the unified
campaign messaging.
Moreover, Public Works will install about 10 to 12 temporary signs in each council district (Thanks to PW Deputy Director Tawfic Halaby)
II – Dating Matters
Yesterday, I had the honor of attending the graduation ceremony for 58 students who completed the Dating Matters curriculum, taught by Ms. Andrea Flores at De Anza High School. This group represented
the second cohort of students to complete the course, which was launched last year in response to a recommendation by the Task Force to End Gender-Based Violence—a task force I initiated in collaboration with the Latina Center, the Family Justice Center, and
numerous other nonprofit organizations across the city and county.
The Task Force emphasized the importance of teaching both girls and boys about healthy relationships from a young age, as a preventive strategy to reduce violence and help youth avoid becoming either victims or perpetrators of gender-based violence.
I am deeply grateful to Principal Pierce for supporting this meaningful collaboration, to Ms. Flores for her dedicated teaching, and to all the students who completed the course—especially those who enthusiastically participated in the skits and role-playing
exercises!
III – Note: For all city matters, please send email to
Soheila_Bana@ci.richmond.ca.us so your message can be forwarded to the city administration. I appreciate your text messages but cannot take action on them.
2 – GOOD NEWS: Richmond Moves Free Rides Here!
Richmond Moves is now city-wide! I am glad to inform you that District 4 residents now have access to $2 rides—and these rides are FREE for seniors and students.
FYI, I have requested that the service be extended to cover Pinole Shopping Center and will keep you posted.
