Honolulu, Sunday, May 4, 1941

Sunday –

Just got in from an evening at Schofield –Max, B. hand, & Mully, Walt & Mary came down for an afternoon at DeRussy. We sunned, swam, shoestring potatoed, & coked all afternoon
at the Pavilion Club – then quick changed into evening clothes & went out to the Schofield Club for dinner together, then to the movies, “Thief of Baghdad.”
[1]
– which as absolutely wonderful, most magnificent colors and photography! You all
shouldn’t miss it! After the movies, we congregated again at Kemoos to “philosophy” over the show and  say goodnight with an ice cream soda — & so home. Mary asked me to spend the night out there, but I have too many stews to brew this week to start
off with a slack Monday morning – it’s 12 now & my alarm starts clicking at 6 in the morning.

Got up this AM about 8, swallowed a bite of breakfast & started to DeRussy with Holland for a swim. Decided to go by and “sight see” the aviary & “part-time” zoo – monkeys,
turtles, big as laundry baskets, and jillions of amazing beautiful birds, peacocks, parrots, cranes, pheasants, — strange colorful birds of the tropics. It is one of the best aviaries in the USA – and was certainly an interesting two hours we spent there.
But on the Club we went – dived in for a hasty swim in the cool water – lunched, then launched open ad for a sunburn. The sun was unpleasantly cooperative – “a red nose was had by all – mine bordering a little on the purplish side.

Just killed a cockroach flying about my cozy little insect house of a bedroom – from his size & vigor, he’d been eating vitamin B, bread and spinach from his minute one,

Back to the parade of news – Friday night I had dinner at the Young Hotel with Bob, and Saturday night I went to the DeRussy dance with him – it was a rather dull evening, but
I met several attractive people – a Lt. Coffman from Fordyce, Ark. – stationed at Rufer –Saturday afternoon late Kit came out for a while – we chatted about home & Honolulu, Army, and Navy – he’s coming to dinner Tuesday night.
