Dear Friend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” In this spirit of active engagement, we invite you to join the City of Richmond, community organizations, and hundreds of local residents tomorrow, Monday, January 17, 2011, for Richmond’s Fourth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event: “Make It A Day On.” Rain or shine, we invite you come on out for a day of community work and celebration, as hundreds of residents and friends work side by side to enhance Richmond’s public Greenway, cultivate urban farms and school gardens, and build a stronger community, together. We’d love to see you there!

Why? ‘Cause you’ll help make Richmond a greener, healthier, stronger place! 
On this National Day of Service, we’ll find you a perfect spot on a Volunteer Team in Richmond. You might:
Plant edible, native, butterfly-friendly plants and trees Learn how to grow and care for medicinal plants Help design a new mural & create helpful signs for our public gardens Beautify Richmond’s public Berryland and the Lincoln School Farm Tend the public Greenway: Pull weeds, lay sheet mulch, and remove litter
Where? We’ll be working all along Richmond’s Greenway, a reclaimed public space now devoted to urban farming and public foraging, complete with butterfly gardens, edible landscapes, medicinal plants, and a Berryland featuring over a dozen varieties of edible berries. There will be three project sites: 6th Street and the Greenway 16th Street and the Greenway Carlson and Ohio, next to the Greenway Click here, and you’ll see a map of where we’ll be! To sign in and get set up on a Volunteer Team, come to the Welcome Table at Sixth Street between Ohio & Chanslor, near Lincoln Elementary School.
When to Arrive, What We’ll Do, and What to Bring? Bring yourself, bring your kids, bring your neighbors and colleagues! 
Rain or shine, the event will begin at 9 AM and end at 1 PM: Teams will tackle projects from 9 AM to 11:30 AM, followed by lunch and a community celebration from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. We’ll have free food, a Kids Zone, and a Performance Stage with DJs, guest speakers, and live music. We’ll have an REI Raffle and a Purple Tree Collard Giveaway, and we’ll present the Greenway Community Leader Awards. We’ll provide you with all tools and materials. Please dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes. If you’ve got work gloves, please bring them!
