I will be at Port Day, along with many other people, picketing, protesting and handing out informational flyers opposed to the relocation of the SS Red Oak Victory, the removal of the Whirley Crane and the closure of the Riggers
Loft. Based on the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical park General Management Plan adopted by the City of Richmond and the National Park element of the General Plan 2023, these historic artifacts and sites comprise the Shipyard 3 Public
Engagement Area and should be preserved, maintained and enhanced rather than dismantled.

 

It is no secret that the plan to convert PPMT (historical Shipyard 3) into an offshore wind support facility is at the heart of the effort to dismantle the Shipyard 3 Public Engagement Area. You definitely will hear from me and
many others opposed to this plan.

I’m reaching out today on behalf of Kearns & West, a national collaboration and communication firm working with the Port of Richmond to assist an engagement for a conceptual site use study to
identify opportunities for port site development and improvements, including considerations for offshore wind.  For background, the California Energy Commission (CEC) awarded the City of Richmond a $750,000 grant to evaluate and plan port infrastructure upgrades
for future offshore wind operations. 

 

While the study is just getting started, we’d like to spread the word about the upcoming Port’s Day Community Event where folks can learn more about the study and other happenings
at the Port. 

 

Port of Richmond Waterfront Facility Improvement Project Engagement 

Pre-planning and initial engagement are just beginning as the study is in its early information gathering phase. As the conceptual site-use study progresses and information becomes
available, further engagement will be conducted to gather thoughts. At this early stage, the Port is interested in hearing initial thoughts and interests in what the Port should consider in its evaluation of the area and how you want to be engaged. As local
residents and organizations with an active interest in Richmond’s future, we want to hear from you. Please come to Ports Day to learn more and share your initial thoughts!

The City of Richmond and the Port of Richmond are celebrating “one of California’s most
historic and active seaports,” while at the same time planning to dismantle the Shipyard 3 Historic Engagement Area, part of Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, by moving the Red Oak Victory and demolishing the Whirley Crane.
The formerly active and popular Riggers Loft has already been forced out of business by the City. See the following for more details:
