San Pablo casino plan cut back, Burton says — State Senate leader John Burton said Friday that Democrats had blocked plans by a Bay Area Indian tribe for a mammoth, 5,000-slot casino in the heart of San Pablo and would only allow one with half as many slot machines. “They aren’t going to build it that big,” Burton, D-San Francisco, said in an interview. “It was my feeling — and the feeling of Congressman (George) Miller — that 5,000 was too much and it ought to be reduced to a maximum of 2,500 (slots). And it’s my understanding they have agreed to it.” John M. Hubbell in the San Francisco Chronicle Steve Wiegand in the Sacramento Bee — 8/21/04
