February 4, 2025

Beginning on November 1, which is the date of my mother’s first letter from her Hawaii trip 84 years ago, I am serializing day by day, the book, Cecilia King’s Extraordinary Senior Trip, which you can obtain from Amazon in either Kindle or paperback.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming nine-months in Hawaii 1940-41. You can order the entire book from Amazon in either paperback or Kindle format, click here.

Tuesday Morning

And the Kona weather is back after four days of grace and trade winds, and our cook is ill. So were mopping our brows with bandanas and doing so scrubbing. I just finished de-spider-eggizing my bureau drawers and vacuuming the study & my rugs.

There’s a bus strike on (this is the fifth day) and I’m running out of everything & can’t wait to get to town for refills – my library books are overdue – and I almost have to get some kind of a dress to wear out to Schofield this weekend. I’ve worn that beige tailored until it’s practically threadbare & had it cleaned enough to buy another one.

But back to the news of the last two days: Wednesday night Adams, Dick, Doloris & I were joking, planning etc. to do this & that, I supposed that no one took the plans seriously until Sunday afternoon (while I was at dinner) Adams called & left a message that he’d be here at seven instead of 6 to take me out. So I frantically called Bob to come a half hour later so I could get rid of Adamas & they wouldn’t clash on the King doorstep. But that wasn’t so smart either because they both got here at 7:30 and Bob stood outside the hedge while Adams & I had a very nasty argument over the whole thing – he had reserved a table for dinner & the concert at Wailai and was so mad his face was purple. After what seemed hours of my trying to be ladylike to his nasty remarks about the reputation he’d give me & Army girls he finally stomped down the steps & banged away in his little Ford. Then in came Uncle Ed & Aunt Susan & Bob together as I was nervous breakdowning – Whew! Some night. Well anyhoo, Bob & I went out trapsing about from Trader Vic’s to Lau Yee Chai, & home via Waikiki tavern for a final hamburger & milk. Saw McAllister (the insanish engineer who came over on the Matsonia with me). Then last night, Bob and I went to the movies at Waikiki – walked & window shopped a few blocks – then went to Lau Yee Chai and had dinner & danced until the inevitable strike of twelve – folded up the orchestra & headed for kahala. Incidentally, Bob is the one who Aunt Susan rated as 60% of what I wanted to marry – but he was very peeved at me last night & didn’t make another date so guess I’m now open for other nominations on the subject.

Worley called last night for ed. – he may drop by tonight if he doesn’t night fly & I don’t replace the date I had with Charley Dole for tonight – Lee had to go to a ticket comm. Meeting for the Yacht Club Valentines dance.
