| Beginning on November 1, which is the date of my mother’s first letter from her Hawaii trip 84 years ago, I am serializing day by day, the book, Cecilia King’s Extraordinary Senior Trip, which you can obtain from Amazon in either Kindle or paperback.
I hope you enjoy the upcoming nine-months in Hawaii 1940-41. You can order the entire book from Amazon in either paperback or Kindle format, click here.
Honolulu, Tuesday, January 7, 1941
I’ve been hopping a day ahead of the calendar all week & am thoroughly mixed up at this point --
Had a lovely morning out on DeRussy beach with Hope Toulon & two other Navy girls (Slarrow sisters) – but unfortunately, absorbed a few too many rays of Sol. & my face & neck look like a stop light. We also ran into the weekly Hui O Wahines luncheon & I quick skipped my bare feet & bathing suit (with me inside) out of the club lest Mrs. Loustalot ensnare me. By the way – my cute bathing suit has gotten loads of compliments – it is rather sassy.
Helen called today setting 11:30 for our Sunday date – and Mary McDonald called in the Feb. party list which includes Max & Westy – I’m going with Westy (joy-joy).
Editor’s Note: “Westy” is William Westmorland, US Army Chief of Staff, 1968-72
The Bernheimes dinner tomorrow night & still no one had called me to take me so A. Susan called the dear lady today & very diplomatically found that Mrs. B had invited “two very nice young men,” dental reserves from Scofield for me, but they had no car to call for me (not that Honolulu wasn’t lousy with taxi services) so I’m to go with Roberts & then meet these startling young men with no autos. A. Susan & I were kidding about it tonight & U. Ed quick “sat” me down & said to not dare mention it (lest they get buggies). ‘Twas all in fun – of course I won’t mention it at all. Maybe my sense of humor should be retired from active duty.
I’m going own at 8:30 in the morning for Marcel to look at my hair about a permanent – if I can ever find (out --) several days to stay in seclusion while it sets. Also to take my record to the police station -- & get some white panties to wear under the white chiffon – the little Jap almost took it up to the waist beyond breathing capacity so the tea rose shows through. The dress looks lovely, though. I’m wearing it tomorrow night, I think – though it’s a temptation to save its first appearance for something “extra elegant” – instead of dental reserves – uh oh – there I go again, opening Pandora’s box. Really & seriously, every minute of every day is so absolutely wonderful that it seems almost impossible, I just couldn’t think of anything more perfect to even ask for. Each day of the two months I’ve been here as been better than the ones before – and a lot more ahead of me. So a very happy – Good Night – it is.
