Beginning on November 1, which is the date of my mother’s first letter from her Hawaii trip 84 years ago, I am serializing day by day, the book, Cecilia King’s Extraordinary Senior Trip, which you can obtain from Amazon in either Kindle or paperback.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming nine-months in Hawaii 1940-41.

Dear Daddy and Mother,

Just came in from dancing at the Young Hotel (roof garden) – my feet hurt & I’m weary of Worley. He’s the dumbest creature I’ve ever seen – but, it does boost my ego because it makes me appear so clever. Naughty thing to say, isn’t it?
We joined two other couples there, Iggie (Lt. Spurgeon) & his date from Chile, South Am. And another A.C. from Georgia and his Navy date. Hit orchestra number of the evening – “Casey Jones” – got more applause than the hula floor show.

I wore my red shoes, navy sheer & had a red carnation lei – after leaving the Young at 12 we stopped on the way home for a Swiss cheese sandwich & milk at Kau Kau – and had a very boring discussion on where the Mason-Dickson line is –Worley played pro baseball to get through college – and lived on a farm near Gettysburg,. Interesting, yes – no? I still don’t know where the M-D is, stupid.

He was telling me about flying over one of Hawaii’s islands last week – 15,000 feet above the snow cap, and 2o above zero – said they nearly froze, not being dressed for anything below 70o. He also asked me to go to the beach tomorrow aft. – which I am not going to do – just on general principles & because of specific reasons.

I called Mary McDonald today & she’s getting my Schofield crowd rounded up for a party in Feb. & it should be wonderful!

Editor’s Note:
Mary McDonald (1921-2014) became a close friend of Cecilia. She was the daughter of Col. Donald C. McDonald, commander of the 25th Division Field Artillery and married Lt. Walter Emil Barker in 1942. Barker retired as colonel and died in 1984. Mary is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

I think that’s about all the news – any hoo I’m too tired to concentrate on another page – so will say Goodnight.
