| What was it like to serve as an Army engineer in Vietnam? I was trained as a combat engineer (MOS 1331 – Combat Engineer Unit Commander) but assigned to the headquarters of a construction engineer group consisting of over 3,000 troops with a lot of equipment and resources, including quarries, rock crushers and asphalt plants. In 1969-70, we were focused on building infrastructure, roads and bridges, for a future independent South Vietnam – which, of course never materialized – but the results of our work endure. We also provided combat support for infantry, artillery and aircraft assets.. For me, it was like being at the hub of a giant construction business (while carrying a weapon). We worked hard, but we also played hard.
This is my story, which is now available from Amazon on Kindle ($2.99) or paperback ($10.00). A good summer read.
