Friday night

Have just finished final arrangements for tomorrow night. U. Ed made me make the seating arrangement first to see my ideas on the subject – I felt as if I were being psychoanalyzed.

Mary McDonald just called saying there was a tall, dark, Lt. Pitney who wanted a date New Years Eave to go with her & her date & would I? So of course I would. He’s Field Artillery & U. Ed & A.S. are quite pleased that I am getting acquainted with that particular branch.

We had dinner tonight at the Ft. Ruger “quick and dirty” (as U. Ed calls it) & saw French Mrs. Louslalot (who is one of that species known as “club women” & amid much exclaiming and ah-ing insisted that A. Susan & I come to the Tues. meeting of the Army-Navy club women’s Hui-O-Wahine (Hawaiian for women’s club). She is very anxious for us to join.
Since A. Susan detests clubs they put me on the grill & steamed me until I finally murmured a faint “I’d like to.” Now it’s up to me to get such a bad nose that I have to keep my appointment wit Capt. Byrnes Tuesday.

This is my outfit for tomorrow night – white & red taffeta dress – white slippers – white pear bag – hair “up” with red velvet bow (I weakened & got it) – gold cross & chain, gold bracelet with red sets.

I looked “close” at some lotus in a florist window today and they were lovely. The bluish, lavender ones had centers shading from the blue down to yellow and the petals were shaded down either to gold or to a deep rose with touches of yellow near the center – the lower ones being an entirely different color from the top ones.

Just discovered that U. ed lies spicy toilette waters & talc – so I’m going to get him some “Old Spice” for Xmas (instead of gum). I’m sure he’ll like it & he’s never used it before.

Town was certainly crowded & Christmas-y today. All the larger stores had uniformed policemen at the doors, elevators & aisles – terrific traffic -- & people hurrying all over the streets & shops.

Don’t remember whether I’ve told you about the island jail or not – I think it’s amusing. If a man is sentenced to 30 days – and has a family dependent on him – his “days” are spent by staying nights in the jail to fill his sentence, but during the day he is free to work to support his family, and by law, is compelled to do so.

Well – lots to do tonight, and more tomorrow – so had better seal this on and say –
