James Michael Akstin
Harry Ells High School Class of 1963
Memorial Day is for remembering those who lost their lives while serving in the military.
In the Vietnam conflict, Richmond lost 32 young men. Most were young, ages 18-21. Four were African American, and four had Hispanic surnames. Six were married. I don’t know how many of their families or friends still live in Richmond.
Memorial Day 2023, we honor James Michael Akstin, a Marine who was born September 8, 1945, and died in a crash at sea on February 2, 1967, in Quang Nam, Vietnam at the age of 22. He was assigned to HMM-262, MAG-36, 1st Marine Air Wing. a door gunner on a helicopter. His parents were Joseph P. and Edna A. Akstin, who lived in Richmond at the time. He is buried at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in San Pablo. James graduated from harry Ells High School in 1963.
