Two people are in intensive care after allegedly attempting to evade police following a sideshow in the Bay Area just after midnight Friday.

The two injured individuals were inside a red 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, according to a news release from Palo Alto police, when police arrived at the sideshow near Palo Alto's Baylands Nature Preserve.

The sideshow participants reportedly fled the scene, and the driver of the Camaro avoided crashing head-on with a police car “by inches” but struck the left front tire, police said.

After driving for a quarter mile down Embarcadero Road, police said, the sports car was seen careening off road and hitting a tree. Police said they believe the driver was inebriated.

A small dog inside the car also sustained major injuries and was euthanized shortly after being taken to a veterinary hospital, the news release said.

Once the driver is released from the hospital, police plan to arrest him and file charges of felony evasion, assault on a police officer due to the minor crash, reckless driving and driving under the influence, Palo Alto police said.

Palo Alto police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from SFGATE.
