Amazon is taking over more than one million square feet in two East Bay cities, The Registry has reported.

The shipping and logistics behemoth is leasing a combined 1.2 million square feet in the cities of Richmond and Hayward during the first quarter. The bigger of the two leases was in Richmond, where Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) leased the 707,820-square-foot Bay Area Logistics Center. That center, which is also for sale, is located at 2995 Atlas Road and currently owned by LDK Ventures.

The Richmond property is directly across the street from another Amazon Distribution Center, and a Whole Foods Distribution Center, UPS hub and planned FedEX Ground facility are all also in the area.

The second lease was a 506,925-square-foot section of Black Creek Group’s Hayward Logistics Center. That warehouse, located at 2710 West Winton Ave., is currently under construction and is expected to come online by the end of the year.

Hayward ended the first quarter with 941,842 square feet of leasing activity, of which more than half went to Amazon, The Registry reported.

Amazon is in the process of growing its portfolio of leases in the Bay Area. In early May, Amazon signed its first lease in Sonoma to take over a large, new warehouse in an unincorporated part of the county. Victory Station LLC signed the deal with the delivery giant to lease up all of its 249,9040-square-foot industrial property at 22810 Eighth St. East near Schellville. The company is expected to move in sometime in autumn and is poised to invest about $15 million to get the vacant facility up and running. Financial terms were not disclosed but the lease is reportedly for about 10 years.

Amazon is also planning to open two new delivery stations in San Jose this year after leasing an entire warehouse building and an under-construction advanced manufacturing facility in San Jose. It also has plans to open a fulfillment center at the site of a huge industrial project in Fremont and operate a fleet yard adjacent to the center with space for nearly 1,000 delivery vans and cars.
