Richmond Ferry weekend service pilot project begins this Saturday, Aug. 3.

Anyone up for a ferry ride to downtown San Francisco this weekend?

It’s now possible. For the first time, a summer weekend ferry service pilot project is set to begin Saturday, Aug. 3. The trial service will run five roundtrips each weekend day throughout August, September and October and the first weekend of November, according to the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA).

See the schedule below. Fares will match commute prices, including discounts for youth, senior and disabled passengers.

The weekend trial comes after ridership far exceeded expectation for the new Richmond ferry line, which launched in January. Last week, WETA announced that the 100,000th passenger had boarded.

WETA suspects the ferry’s population has a lot to do with the desire to avoid the traffic-plagued I-80 corridor. The majority of passengers using the ferry live in Richmond, according to a WETA survey.
