Stonyfield Organic and the City of Richmond Team Up to Support Organic Maintenance Practices at Nicholl Park
On Friday, August 30, a check presentation will commemorate the collaboration to transition Nicholl Park to organic grounds management
WHAT:
Stonyfield is teaming up with the City of Richmond, Beyond Pesticides and Osborne Organics as part of its #PlayFree initiative, which aims to help convert public parks and playing fields across the country to organic grounds management to ensure community spaces are free from the use of harmful pesticides.
Stonyfield has made a donation to the City of Richmond to transition Nicholl Park to organic management. Nicholl Park offers residents 21 acres of outdoor space including a playground, soccer field, picnic area, lawn bowling, putting green, tennis courts and baseball fields.
WHO: Speakers will include:
- City of Richmond Mayor, Tom Butt
- Stonyfield Representative, Michael Galardi
WHEN:
Friday, August 30th
11 am – 12 pm PST
WHERE:
Nicholl Park Entrance
3230 Macdonald Ave
Richmond, CA
WHY:
Richmond adopted an Integrated Pest Management plan in July of 2012 to minimize pesticide use within city departments that dealt with pest and weed control. While this plan did aim to limit pesticide use, the city did not ban it completely – until a few years later, that is.
In 2015, the Richmond City Council unanimously voted to ban all pesticide use, including herbicides like glyphosate, from public parks and fields. The city is working with school districts, city departments, and enthusiastic citizens to encourage a continued movement away from harmful pesticides and towards organic field maintenance.
Event Day Press Instructions:
Reporters and photographers are invited to attend the check presentation and are also invited to speak with representatives from Stonyfield and the City of Richmond Mayor and Parks and Landscaping Team.
Photos will also be available following the event upon request.
