  California State Library Selects Richmond as City of the Month!

Congratulations to our September City of the Month, Richmond! Incorporated in 1905 and located on the historic Rancho San Pablo, Richmond boasted a population of 103,701 people as of 2010. In addition to having several active local history organizations, Richmond is also home to a shipyard instrumental in constructing naval vessels for World War II, several historic structures and more! Fun Facts

  • Did you know that Richmond once had the largest winery in the world? It’s true! Winehaven, a facility run by the California Wine Association was considered the largest wine facility in the world between 1911 and 1917. It shut down shortly after the beginning of prohibition and never re-opened.
  • Did you know that Richmond set a ship-building record? It’s true! In 1942, the Richmond Shipyard Number 2 run by Permanente Metals, built a full Liberty ship in 4 day, 15 hours and 26 minutes. You can even see pictures of its construction in a souvenir book owned by the State Library commemorating the event.
