Below is a copy of a message from Congressman mark DeSaulnier:

Like most members of the Richmond community, I was deeply troubled and surprised when a notice was posted at the Nevin Post Office in January announcing plans to move retail operations out of the historic downtown site.

Consider joining us at our second community meeting regarding the post office on Thursday June 15, 2017 at the Nevin Center at 598 Nevin Ave. from 6-8 pm.

Dear Friends:

On May 31, 2017, the United States Postal Service (USPS) held a community meeting in Richmond City Hall to propose their plan to move retail operations out of the Nevin Avenue Post Office in Richmond, California.

USPS plans to relocate the retail operations from Nevin Avenue in the center of downtown Richmond to the McVittie Annex Station, approximately one mile away on Chanslor Avenue. After that phase, USPS intends to sell the historic Richmond Post Office Building. I whole-heartedly oppose this plan.

This post office is at the heart of the community and remains a vital resource for Richmond residents. The importance of the Richmond Post Office to the commerce of the city in the retail-rich downtown area, and the historic value of the post office building cannot be overemphasized.

USPS has now opened a 30-day public comment period, during which time it will consider input from the community before making a final determination. USPS shared that the comments it receives will be heavily weighed in the decision-making process. In order for comments to be considered, USPS must receive your opinion on or before June 30, 2017. If you are interested in expressing your opinion about the plan to close and sell the Nevin Avenue Post Office, you may write a letter detailing your views to:
