A pilot project to turn a dilapidated alleyway in the Iron Triangle into a green space that serves both as a pedestrian and bicycle pathway and stormwater management system received the green light from City Council on Tuesday.
Council unanimously adopted a resolution awarding nearly $539,000 to Ghilotti Bros., Inc., to carry out the Mathieu Court Alley Greening Project. The project aims to transform the alley between Barrett and Ripley avenues into what officials have termed an “Emerald Alley,” an aesthetically-pleasing, multi-use green space.
Work on the project will likely begin in early to mid January, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed by early spring, also weather permitting, project manager Michael Williams said.
In September, city officials said they hope the alley’s makeover will inspire similar projects in other Richmond locations, including Turpin Street Alley just two blocks away, which provides a connection to Peres Elementary School.
The city is targeting alleys that can connect people to places, which often rules out dead-ends.
The Emerald Alley Project was partly inspired by Pogo Park’s famous Yellow Brick Road Project in the Iron Triangle, a street-calming and greening project that is also about to get started after receiving a $6.2 million state grant.
