HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS EXPECTED TO HELP TURN AN AGING NEIGHBORHOOD PARK INTO A COMMUNITY GEM

What:  Make a Difference Day at John F. Kennedy Park

Who:   Mayor Tom Butt and Councilmembers, Community Volunteers, The Trust for Public Land, Chevron, The 50 Tour:  Champions of the Bay (Super Bowl 50 Community Tour)

Why:   Hundreds of volunteers will converge on John F. Kennedy Park on national Make a Difference Day to rebuild a beloved neighborhood park and plant 50 trees in celebration of Arbor Day.  The nearly 50 year-old park will get a much needed extreme makeover to include:
-          new family zone and children’s playscape
-          Fitness Zone TM (a free outdoor gym)
-          ¼-mile fitness trail with nine stations along a walking loop
-          Bay-friendly landscape demonstration areas (including a rain garden)
-          Victory Garden and outdoor classroom
-          5,000 sf mural at the event plaza
-          bike skills park

A new picnic pavilion and STEM outdoor learning center will begin construction this fall, creating a transformative landmark at the heart of the park.

In addition to the community-build park event, the public is invited to visit The 50 Tour:  Champions of the Bay presented by Chevron.  The tour will feature the Lombardi trophies for the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers, a guest appearance by a NFL legend, and an interactive STEM learning zone.

When:             Saturday, October 24, 2015; 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Where:            John F. Kennedy Park; Cutting Boulevard and South 41st Street; Richmond, CA
