Berkeley Global Campus at Richmond Bay Community Working Group Seeks Applications for Two New Member Seats

In April of 2014, the Chancellor of UC Berkeley (UCB) and the Director of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) issued a Joint Letter of Commitment to Strengthen Community Partnerships between UCB, LBNL, and the Richmond community. The statement provides for the creation of a Community Working Group. The 2014-16 Working Group has been established, with members appointed to serve for two years. It is composed of representatives from a broad selection of constituencies, including leaders from labor, education, government, faith-based organizations, business, and non-profits organizations.
The Community Working Group is seeking two new members:
- A neighbor (living adjacent to in close proximity to the site of the Berkeley Global Campus); and
- A housing and displacement issues member.
About the Housing/Displacement Seat:
At the May CWG meeting, members voted in favor of adding a housing and displacement seat. This individual will have expertise or experience in housing issues and is engaged in addressing issues related to affordable housing and displacement, including tenant concerns.
About the BGC Neighbor Seat:
At the May CWG meeting, members also voted in favor of adding a seat to represent a neighborhood adjacent to (or in close proximity to) the Berkeley Global Campus. This individual lives in an adjacent neighborhood, is active in their local neighborhood association and/or in other neighborhood activities, and is able to represent their neighbors as a CWG member.
Purpose of the Community Working Group:
To develop recommendations and proposals that will lead to binding, legally enforceable commitments to the Richmond community regarding benefits from the BGCRB in education, local employment, procurement and workforce training. Issues of housing and displacement are also of interest to the Community Working Group. A subcommittee for each has or will be formed to explore issues and develop recommendations to bring before the CWG. Developing these recommendations will also be assisted by a third-party facilitator.
Responsibilities of Community Working Group (CWG) Members:
• – Serve the remainder of the two-year term (ending September 2016).
• – Be available for regular meetings, monthly or as necessary, for the length of their terms. (Current meetings are the 4th Thursday of the month, 6 to 8pm)
• – Have own transportation to CWG meetings and subcommittee meetings.
• – Honor and comply with principles in the CWG Charter.
• – Seek to nurture shared understanding and effective collaboration with other CWG members.
• – Share the CWG’s process, progress and proposals with their respective constituencies and ensure any advice given is accounted for in the CWG’s recommendations.
• – Build on existing assets and prioritize the needs of the Richmond community in BGCRB projects and initiatives that are proposed and developed.
• – Make recommendations to Richmond-based public, community and civic institutions to encourage adoption of enabling policies and/or investments.
Selection criteria for Community Working Group Members (Housing/Displacement or Neighbor Seat)
• – Be available for regular meetings, monthly or as necessary, for the length of their two-year terms
• – Be able to satisfy the monthly time commitment of 5-10 hours (see below for more information)
• – Live or work in Richmond
• – Work or volunteer in Richmond in at least one of the areas identified above
Time commitment of Community Working Group Members (5 to 10 hours per month)
• – Attend one 2-hour CWG meeting per month (4th Thursday at the site of the Berkeley Global Campus at Richmond Bay)
• – Attend subcommittee meetings each month as needed (2-4 hours)
• – Participate in a retreat with fellow CWG meetings (one half day retreat)
• – Conduct research, outreach or other follow-up work from CWG and subcommittee meetings as needed (2-4 hours per month)
• – Liaison with constituency as needed (1-2 hours per month)
