The Richmond Art Center’s Annual Members’ Show and an exhibit of NIAD crafts entitled “Telling It Slant” also open that weekend.  The three exhibitions are sponsored by Blick Art Materials.  A public reception for all the artists will be held Sat., June 13, 2015 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Art Center.

Pre-eminent jurors Beth Ann Gerstein, Mary Bayard-White and Deborah Lozier selected the artwork for “California Now.”  Gerstein, whose medium is clay, is the new Executive Director of the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, Calif., and also serves on the Board of Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Maine.  Bayard-White, whose medium is glass, is a Bay Area sculptor and adjunct instructor at St. Mary’s College in Moraga.  She has also been a visiting Fulbright Scholar and Lecturer at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland.  Lozier is an internationally known metal-smith and enamellist who lives in Oakland.  She has been an adjunct professor at California College of the Arts since 1994 and her work is included in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum of California, as well as many private collections.
“Artwork for the show was chosen for the melding of technical excellence and content and for its ability to push the boundaries of the form,” explained Ric Ambrose, executive director of the Art Center. The exhibition is presented by the Art Center in partnership with the Center for Enamel Art and the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California.
Richmond Art Center’s Annual Members’ Show

An exhilarating arrangement of artwork, media, and styles will be featured in the Art Center’s annual, non-juried members show, which runs from June 14 through August 23, 2015.   Nearly 200 pieces of artwork will be showcased, including works by spotlight artists Edythe Bresnahan, Jan Martin, and David Yoas who were recognized for their ingenuity and visual voice at last year’s annual members show. This year’s show will also include a selection of works by the Art Center’s former Studio Art Director Kato Jaworski.

“Telling It Slant: Crafts of NIAD Art Center” (National Institute of Art and Disabilities)
Richmond’s NIAD Art Center has been helping artists with disabilities produce craft objects and contemporary art for more than 30 years. This exhibition offers a rare and in-depth look at some of its celebrated offerings, including works from self-taught basket-maker Susan Wise, modernist-influenced ceramic vessels from blind artist Kristi Dean, strangely evocative clay structures from Sylvia Fragoso, detailed painted silk wall hangings by Jean McElvane, as well as a selection of quilts including works by Alice Sampson. The exhibit is curated by Courtney Eldridge. author of Unkempt, a collection of short stories; The Generosity of Women, a novel;  and Ghost Time, the first installment of a young adult trilogy.
