There's no lack of free and cheap music events in the East Bay, especially with the ever-popular First Fridays street parties and the slew of new Oakland music festivals that have popped up of late. It can be easy to forget that there's a world of free music outside of Oakland, but the Point Richmond Music Festival is well worth the short trip north. The annual summer festival has been going strong for thirteen years, an impressive feat considering that the Point Richmond Music group, which produces the series, is entirely run by volunteers. The festival brings live music to the corner of Park Place and Washington Avenue in downtown Point Richmond every second Friday of the month from June through September. The family-friendly events each feature two bands as well as other activities, such as face-painting, often drawing more than three hundred people from all over the Bay Area. There's no lack of interested talent, either. Festival organizers said that they reviewed nearly two hundred band submissions this season, allowing them to put together a mixed-genre lineup as diverse as the festival audience.
