New Lighthouse Keepers for East Brother
July 30, 2014

After a highly competitive recruitment process that began in early June and concluded yesterday, Stephanie and Bryan Wesolek of Miami, FL, have been selected as the next keepers of East Brother Light. They are the latest in a long line of keepers that goes back to 1874.

For the first time ever, both keepers are U.S. Coast Guard licensed captains, each with 50-ton licenses. Both have years of experience in boating and serving the public.

Bryan is currently employed as a sailing instructor, has also completed the United Kingdom Sailing Academy and is a Commercially Endorsed Ocean Yachtmaster. He has a BA in mathematics and a business background in computer aided graphic design and chemistry.

They have a 41-foot sailboat that they will be moving to the west coast.

East Brother lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard but maintained for public use by the non-profit corporation, East Brother Light Station, Inc. Since 1979, it has been operated as one of California's best-known and unique bed and breakfast inns. The income from operations is used by a group of volunteers to maintain the buildings, which are both a California State Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
