Peter Case returns to Point Richmond Acoustic - Come early for best seats!

Dear Tom,

Three-time Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Peter Case returns to Point Richmond Acoustic this Friday, December 14, at 8 PM. The show is located at the First Methodist Church, 201 Martina Avenue in Point Richmond. Award-winning contemporary blues songwriter Ernest Troost opens the show. Tickets are $18/$15 for students and seniors at the door. More info is available at www.pointacoustic.org.

Peter has a dedicated following, and we have been getting emails requesting advance ticket sales. Unfortunately, we aren't set up for advance tickets. But we are sure we can accomodate everyone who wants to see the show. The last concert with Peter filled the main room, with one or two people standing. (I was one of them, because I like to stand during concerts.) In the event that we exceed the 99 person capacity of the main room, we can open the rear slide-up doors and seat another 45 people with decent sound and view lines. All that said - if you want the best seating, be there when the doors open at 7:30. And as the pews are wooden, you may want to bring a cushion.

You can hear Peter live on the air around 9 pm this Wednesday on David Gan's Dead to the World show on KPFA.

Peter Case PRAPeter Case is really in a category all his own. His last show demonstrated his incredible high-energy performance style, and his deep book of songs drawn from more than 12 CDs and three and a half decades playing folk, blues, and rock all around the world. Case’s work sets the bar for authenticity, passion and imagination and spans a number of genres. Raised in Buffalo, NY, Case came to the Bay area in 1973 and worked as a street musician and played in the seminal power pop group The Nerves, before moving to Los Angeles to form the Plimsouls, landing a deal with Geffen Records.

The Plimsouls achieved success with the single, “Million Miles Away,” but broke up shortly after. Case’s 1986 solo Geffen record revealed deep roots in folk and blues, and earned him his first Grammy nomination for the song “Old Blue Car” as well as the Number 1 spot on the NY Time’s 1986 Best CDs list. Six CDs later, Case earned another nomination for Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, a remarkable collection of songs that features Case’s voice and a single guitar. It’s clear that Case is a major talent on the Americana troubadour landscape, sharing a vision for modern folk with songwriters such as Dave Alvin, Steve Earle, Tom Russell and Mary Gauthier.

Case’s 2010 CD, Wig emphasized the rock and blues side of Case’s repertoire, while 2007's Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John demonstrates what Case can do with just a single voice and a guitar. With or without a backing band, Case delivers his songs with both intense passion and instrospective nuance.

Opening artist Ernest Troost is an Emmy-award-winning film and television composer and a recipient of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Award. His evocative style combines folk and Piedmont-blues-style guitarimages-2 picking with timeless stories and colorful character portrayals drawn from the American past and present. His talent, both as a guitarist and a lyricist, is extraordinary.

The Pt. Richmond First Methodist Church is an intimate place for concerts, and music is an important part of its program. Built more than 100 years ago, the octagonal shaped sanctuary accentuates the up close and personal nature of the music. Pt. Richmond is a small enclave right off 580, ten minutes north of Berkeley and 10 minutes east of San Rafael.

The Point Richmond Acoustic Music series is completely non-religious and people of all faiths as well as no faith are welcome. It’s a friendly no-pressure environment, and even if it’s been a few decades since you have set foot in a church, no one is going to bite you. But they might offer you a cookie or cup of coffee. It’s all about the music here.

The Point Richmond season continues on the 2nd Friday of each month with some stellar talent:

January 11 - Evie Ladin Band - Bay Area favorite (from the Stairwell Sisters) blends traditional folk influences and modern songwriting. Award winning Wisconsin songwriter Katie Dahl opens the show.
February 8 – Claudia Russell, Bruce Kaplan and friends
March 8 – Laurie Lewis, the Bay Area’s legendary Queen of Bluegrass
April 12 – Banjo Master  Bill Evans
May 10 – Folk Blues with Chris Webster and guitarist extraordinaire Nina Gerber

Point Richmond Acoustic is co-sponsored by Point Richmond Music, Folk Unlimited and the First Methodist Church and is all volunteer. Visit www.pointcacoustic.org for more info or contact Pt Richmond Acoustic at folkunlimited@att.net.
