Point Richmond Acoustic presents Songwriters Bill and Kate Isles, with special guest the Henriettas.
Ongoing music series continues to present premiere songwriters from around the country.
(Point Richmond – March 20, 2011) Point Richmond Acoustic Concerts presents the duo of Bill and Kate Isles, Friday, April 13 at the first Methodist Church of Point Richmond, 201 Martina Avenue. Show starts at 8 pm, tickets are $15. The Henriettas, a novel 1930s style duo, open the show.
Bill and Kate Isles are two of the best-known singer/songwriters in the Midwestern acoustic scene and have received national and international attention with comparisons to heartland songwriters like Willie Nelson and Woody Guthrie. The duo have a great gift for metaphor and melody, served up with a thin slice of Midwestern ham.
The couple met in 2001, as Bill was relaunching his musical career. Kate was a closet singer/songwriter, working as a wine sales rep when she came to a concert after hearing Bill on a radio interview. She bought a CD and signed up on his e-mail list. Soon afterwards they met to share coffee, songs, and harmony - and have been together ever since, marrying in May of 2004. They are currently on a four-and-a-half month coast-to-coast tour in support of their newest album, “Still Beneath the Stars and Moon” which features Kate as primary songwriter and lead vocalist on half of the songs. The response has been great, with reviews noting the duo’s perfect blend of two voices.
Bill and Kate’s songs are both poetic reflections of modern’s life experiences as well as nods of the hat to simpler times, too. Admittedly romantics, many of their lyrics focus on the joy of relationships, but others explore metaphorical worlds, finding larger meaning in simple things such as fences, hobos, and matching baggage.
Special guests, The Henriettas are Nell Robinson and Cary Sheldon. They have been featured stages and festivals across the country, including A Prairie Home Companion. Their inspirations are the Cackle Sisters, the first women to become stars on both the National Barn Dance and the Grand Ole Opry. Nell and Cary bring close harmonies, yodeling and cackling to recreate a juicy slice of 1930s Americana.
The Point Richmond Acoustic concert series, in its second season, is sponsored by Point Richmond Music and the First Methodist Church. The Church itself is intimate and an acoustic marvel. The 100-year-old building is an octagonal wooden prism that appears to be built by nautical carpenters. “It’s like listening to music inside a guitar.” Series co-producer Kaplan explains, “Our program is nonsectarian and people of all faiths, or no faith are welcome. It’s a friendly no-pressure environment. So even if it’s been a few decades since you have set foot in a church no one is going to bite you…but we will offer you a cookie or cup of coffee. It’s all about the music here!”
Come see another fine evening of acoustic hand made music, up close and personal, at Point Richmond Acoustic, April 13, at 8 pm at the First Methodist Church in Point Richmond, 201 Martina Avenue.
