U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer gave accolades Tuesday to the city of Richmond's job-training program and a nonprofit group that teaches students how to install solar panels on rooftops. Boxer, D-Calif., presented RichmondBUILD and the nonprofit Solar Richmond with conservation champion awards as students and supporters applauded. Boxer, who toured the RichmondBUILD center before presenting the awards, said job-training programs are a vital part of the expanding green economy. "These are great jobs, well-paying jobs, and they can't be exported," Boxer said. "It's got to be done here in the neighborhood with the people from the neighborhood." — Katherine Tam
