WW II Home Front Summer Film Festival on the Red Oak Victory Ship

Summer Film Festival on the Red Oak Victory Ship

(Richmond, CA) – Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park and the Richmond Museum of History Association will present a WWII Home Front Film Festival in June, July and August 2009. The film festival will feature popular, full-length movies that were shown on the home front during the 1940s.

A total of seven movies (one per night; one evening has a double feature) will be shown on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of June (11th & 25th), July (9th & 23rd) and August (13th & 27th). Showtime is at 7:00 pm on board the SS Red Oak Victory, a beautifully restored ship built during World War II. The ship is located in historic Shipyard No. 3, where thousands of Americans labored to build 747 ships over the course of the war. The ship is located at 1337 Canal Blvd., Berth 6A, in Richmond. Boarding is at 6:30 pm and admission is free.

There is a suggested donation of $5 ($4 for seniors) to board the ship and enjoy ship exhibits prior to the film. Entry to the ship is via a forty-foot gangplank, with railings, and then a steep 14-step descent to Hold 4, where the films will be shown. Popcorn and refreshments will be available for purchase. A National Park Service ranger will provide an introduction to the films in the context of the WWII home front. Established in 2000 in collaboration with the city of Richmond and other partners, Rosie the Riveter/ World War II Home Front National Historical Park celebrates the role of countless Americans in Richmond, and across the nation, who made contributions and sacrifices to achieve victory on the home front.
