Coho Salmon Along the Bay Trail in Richmond March 7, 2007 |
For the last several weeks, Coho Salmon have been reported hanging out in Meeker Slough along the Bay Trail in Richmond. For example, Kate Clark reported today:
"We saw the fish again today. They're just hanging out near the bottom of the cement drainage in Meeker Slough. As best we can tell they must be Coho. The dark back and red-orange sides, the size, and the dorsal spots seem to be consistent in all the fish we see. Today they were going around and around, and turning up the mud a bit, so it was really hard to get a good view. They also kept startling the Coots! "
This follows up on the following report three weeks ago: "My husband and I recently saw Coho Salmon about 2 to 3 feet long in Meeker Slough, possibly seeking a late place to spawn. They showed up the day after the last storm. There were 8 or more of them. Four were very visible in very shallow water. They were quite large and we were quite close to them. They turned back when the water became too shallow for them to swim."
This is yet another example of the Ecotourism opportunities along the Bay Trail in Richmond. Check it out. If you don't know Meeker Slough, AKA Meeker Tidal Creek, you will find it on the Richmond Bay Trail map available at http://www.pointrichmond.com/baytrail/map.htm . Meeker Tidal Creek runs under the Bay Trail bridge on the east side of Marina Bay en route to Point Isabel Regional Park. You also may wish to check out whether salmon may be viewed from the "secret" public trail on the north side of Meeker Tidal Creek, which may be accessed easily from the end of South 32nd St. just south of Regatta Blvd behind Bio-Rad's facility.
