Another Architect in the Family February 29, 2004 |
|
Our older son, Andrew Martin Butt, was
notified on February 27 that he had passed his final test, an oral
examination before the California Architects Board, to complete his
eligibility to become a licensed architect in California. In order to
legally use the title “architect,” one has to complete five years of
architecture school, apprentice with a licensed architect for three
years, pass nine written tests, including building design and site
planning using CAD (Computer Aided Design), and then pass a final oral
examination. Andrew attended, like his father, the University of Arkansas School of Architecture. He worked for an architecture firm in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for a short time before moving back to Richmond and joining Interactive Resources, where he has participated in the design of a number of local projects, including Baltic Square, modernization of Stewart and Washington elementary schools and the new Student Activities/Student Services building at Contra Costa College. Andrew has also been involved in a number of volunteer endeavors, including leading the Spirit of Excellence program of Washington School Many Hands Project, helping to organize and run the Point Richmond Summer Music Festival and participating in maintenance projects at East Brother Light Station. Last year, Andrew completed the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Leadership Academy. Andrew also has a taste for extreme sports. Last spring he and several friends climbed Mount Shasta and snowboarded down from the summit. Andrew is married to Kimberly Martin Butt, whom he met while attending the University of Arkansas. Kim is also a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Architecture and works for an architecture firm in San Francisco. She is also well on her way to becoming a licensed architect. |
