Lynne Cheney Visits Richmond to
Honor Rosies January 15, 2004 |
|
Lynne Cheney, author, scholar and wife of the Vice-President, made a special trip to Richmond today to visit the fledgling Rosie the Riveter World War II/Home Front National Historical Park and present a check for $10,000 to the Rosie the Riveter Trust to help with projects to develop the National Park.
The Rosie the Riveter Trust is the non-profit organization formed to assist in the development and operation of the National Park, which is a partnership among the National Park Service, the City of Richmond and Contra Costa County.
Mrs. Cheney is the author of two best-selling children’s books on history, recently published. The book, A is for Abigail: An Almanac of Amazing American Women celebrates the remarkable achievements of American women throughout history. The alphabet book for kids contains the page “R is for Rosie the Riveter and women who went to war,” outlining through words and illustrations the efforts of America’s “Rosies” on the home front. Mrs. Cheney donates the net proceeds from sale of her books to charities.
The presentation ceremony took place in the lobby of the Marina Bay interim City Hall attended by Mayor Irma Anderson, City Manager Jay Corey, County Supervisor John Gioia, Park Superintendent Judy Heart, Chief of Interpretation Rick Smith and six “Rosies.” Tom Butt accepted the check as the president of Rosie the Riveter Trust.
After the ceremony, Mrs. Cheney toured the Rosie the Riveter Memorial with Superintendent Hart and Rick Smith. |
