WHAT:  Change of location for school board meetings

WHERE: Lovonya DeJean Middle School Multipurpose Room, 3400 Macdonald Avenue,  Richmond, CA 94805 (directions follow)

WHEN: Beginning with the special board meeting on April 30, 2003, and all subsequent regularly scheduled board meetings, with public session beginning approximately at 6:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND: On April 30, 2003, the Board of Education of the West Contra Costa Unified School District will move the location of its meetings from Pinole Valley High School in Pinole to the new Lovonya DeJean Middle School in Richmond.  The district will continue to conduct live broadcasts of these meetings over radio station KECG, 88.1 and 97.7 FM.

Moving the location of board meetings to DeJean Middle School is part of the school board’s ongoing effort to increase contact and improve communication with all parts of the district community.  “My fellow board members and I would like to thank the Pinole Valley High School staff and community for hosting our school board meetings this year,” said Board President Patricia Player.

“We now look forward to our new location at DeJean Middle School, beginning with the special meeting on April 30,” Ms. Player said. “Citizens who are able to attend our meetings in person will have the opportunity to see our new middle school, built by Measure E bond funds.  And the school will give people a glimpse of how our other schools will be modernized over the next several years.”

In addition to Pinole Valley High School, past locations of school board meetings have included Kennedy and Richmond high schools, the Vista Hills Staff Development Center in Richmond, and Helms Middle

School in San Pablo.

Directions to WCCUSD School Board Meetings (beginning April 30, 2003)

From south of Macdonald Avenue/Richmond:

• Take Interstate 80 through Berkeley, Albany, and El Cerrito, and into Richmond.

• Turn off at the Macdonald Avenue exit.  The preceding exits are Carlson Blvd. and Potrero Avenue. The offramp will put you onto Macdonald Avenue, heading west (towards the bay).

• Continue west on Macdonald Avenue to the fourth stoplight.  This is 33rd Street.  As you approach 33rd Street you will see the school on the left side.  Turn left on 33rd Street.  Park on the street, or in the parking lot located next to the gym towards the end of the block.

• The entrance to the Multipurpose Room is on 33rd Street, across the street from the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation building (the old YWCA).

From north of Macdonald Avenue/Richmond:

• Take Interstate 80 west through Hercules, Pinole, and San Pablo, and into Richmond.  Take the San Pablo Avenue Avenue exit.  The preceding exits are San Pablo Dam Road and McBryde Ave.

• Turn right onto Barrett Avenue.

• Continue on Barrett and turn left at the first stoplight, which is 37th Street.

• Go two blocks and turn right onto Macdonald Avenue.  Continue to 33rd Street.

• Turn left onto 33rd Street. Park on the street, or in the parking lot located just after the gym, towards the end of the block.

• The entrance to the Multipurpose Room is on 33rd Street, across the street from the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation building (the old YWCA).
