Time to Take the Gloves Off

Ordinarily the E-FORUM stays away from non-local issues, but I can’t resist weighing in on 9/11 and airline security. For a time it was healthy for our national psyche to pull together on this. Now it is time to get real.

This disaster took place on the George W. Bush watch, and he and his administration have to bear responsibility. We are tired of excuses. The administration knew or should have known that the threat existed, and yet they failed to act. They were apparently too busy trying to bankrupt California to focus on national security.

Then, after it happened, they spent billions “fighting the last war” to avoid a repeat of 9/11. Searching purses of little old ladies in airports while thousands of travelers cool their heels doesn’t seem like the solution. It certainly wouldn’t have avoided 9/11. Even our governor got excited and sent a bunch of California National Guard personnel to save our bridges, even though their weapons were dirty, their vehicles broken and their marksmanship skills untested.
