Preservation Committee To
Consider Red Cross Building And Galileo Club April 19, 2002 |
On Thursday, April 25, 2002, the Richmond
Historic Preservation Advisory Committee will meet at 7:00 PM in
Conference Room 2 of the Community Services Building (west of the
Richmond Main Library) to consider bestowing “Historic Resource” status
on two buildings prominent in Richmond history. 1. The Galileo Club was founded in 1932 as a social cub for Italian-Americans, and the first phase of the building on 23rd Street was constructed in 1938. 2. The Red Cross Building located on City property in Nicholl Park on MacDonald Avenue played a prominent role during World War II and has a potential role in expanding the story told by the Rosie the Riveter WW II Homefront National Historical Park. Apparently, the Red Cross has plans to demolish the building. Anyone with stories to tell about the history of either of these buildings is invited to attend to share any information they may have. |
