Richmonders And Railroad Buffs
Rally To Save Historic Point Richmond Wig-Wags January 23, 2002 |
Hundreds of Richmond residents and railroad
aficionados are rallying to save the 80-year old wig-wags that are at
the entrance to the Point Richmond historic district and have become a
community icon. Many of the merchants have banded together and will be
at the next city council meeting on Tuesday January 29th. This has
become more than just a rail fan issue as they are seriously concerned
that the installation of three new cantilever signals will have a
negative impact on the historic nature of their town and that the new
crossing gates will block patrons of local businesses. Trains creep
across this crossing at about 5 MPH as this track is used only for
switching. The railroad insists it is a safety issue, but in the last
100 years, there is no record of a train-vehicle (or even train-horse)
collision. For more, see http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?f=1&i=116591&t=116591 |
